It all started with a little yellow can, in a small Yakitori restaurant on the outskirts of Ginza, as the server brought out my order, I was asked in the best English she could offer if I wanted something to drink. Not wanting to be the stereotypical tourist I asked what’s good, thinking back on it maybe that was the stereotypical tourist thing to do.
With a smile, my server left and shortly returned with a small yellow can of slightly chilled Sake. At this point, I was a little concerned. It’s not that I was worried I couldn’t handle my alcohol, no it’s just that I had tried sake in the past and let’s just say that works like dishwater came into my mind. That’s right this Sake Nerd was a Sake hater. Not wanting to disrespect or cause a scene I deiced to gather my will and resolve to finish this can not matter what.
It only took one small sip and I was sent into a state of surprised and excited. It was a crisp slightly sweet with only a slight bite I was completely shocked, and it also paired remarkably well with the yakitori which was also incredible as most food in Japan is. I was only in Tokyo for two more nights, but I made sure to order sake with every dinner I had for those two nights. Needless to say, this experience ignited a new passion for me. I hope to track my experience and hopefully share this passion for great sake.
